A Marketing Epiphany

In class today one of my classmates really didn't want to do her work. She's actually working on a documentary but she's really far along with it and wasn't really feeling it working more on her project so instead for some reason she started helping us. It turns out I go to the bathroom for a second come back and I find her and one of my other group members passing around the piece of paper and making people sign it with a sharpie. Everyone seemed incredibly excited about it. Their faces would immediately light up and they started smiling from ear to ear with all of their ideas for what they could write.

It was at this moment where I got an awesome guerilla marketing idea. You know those movies that go into city centers and do marketing projects. For example i've seen it with Stranger Things. Now my idea for a marketing campaign it's kind of along this vein. It would essentially involve creating a booth, where there would be an artificial bathroom wall and people would be free to legally write anything they wanted. In the complete anonymity of a real bathroom, without the legal and ethical dilemma. I talked to my teacher about it and she emphasized how this would get at people's natural urge to want to make their mark and draw on the bathroom wall but it would especially get at those people who would never actually do it because of the legal implications. I kept seeing how people would pass around this paper and they would they would just go crazy drawing out whatever they wanted, it was hypnotizing.

Not only did we develop this marketing campaign, we also got like we also got an idea for creating our title. Nicole had been messing around with Instagram on her blog and making bathroom graffiti style titles. But what she was really struggling with is the fact that her drawings didn't look realistic because they weren't actually made by a real person. So, me and manuela got another piece of paper and we started passing it around with a bunch of colored sharpies, the results were so much better than what we could have imagined everyone took it really seriously. A scheme than planned the very best way to leave their mark. This kind of experiment proved to me that there really was something with this idea and reminded me what initially brought me to it, I've had some disillusionment as the project has gone on and improved someone somewhat difficult, this experiment reminded me the potential of this idea has. Thank you off task girl in my class for showing us this.
